GABBI DAVIS-MUSKOGEE

Inspired by her mom’s high school athletic exploits, Muskogee High junior Gabbi Davis has upped her softball game for the Roughers this year.

“She’s all the things you want in a kid,” said her coach, Marc Dicus. “She’s a hard worker, is very coachable and pleasant. She’s good enough that you’d want to take her home with you,” laughed the veteran coach. “She plays a solid third base for us, hits in the three hole in the line up and leads the team in home runs with seven at this time.”

“I grew up hearing stories about my mom who played softball, basketball and ran track in high school and I decided I wanted to be like her,” said Gabbi. “I started playing softball around the age of three and have been playing ever since. I play travel ball with the Oklahoma Intimidators where I play first base mostly.”

Gabbi has played basketball in the past and feels she may play again in her senior year.  She has two younger brothers who are also athletes, Logan, who is 13, plays basketball and baseball as does her other brother Allan who is almost 15 and plays football as well. There’s a lot of competitiveness among the three of them according to Gabbi but it’s mostly on a friendly basis.

“We’re all pretty lovey-dovey in our competition though I do get into it with Logan sometimes because our personalitiesare so much alike,” she said.

Her goals for this softball season center more on the team and being a smarter hitter.

“I want to do my best to encourage my teammates to be great and not necessarily worry about hitting a homer every time. I’ve worked on improving my swing so that I’m more of line drive spray hitter and less reliant on being just a power hitter so I can have more RBIs.”

Though just a junior, Gabbi feels she does have a leadership role on the team.

“I think a good leader is being able to connect with your teammates on their level and not in a harsh way.”

Gabbi says the highlight of her time as a Lady Rougher was last year when she three home runs back-to-back-to-back against Bixby.
