A district championship remains a defining football memory for Cole McQueen, but the Muskogee senior measures his experience by more than wins. The sport has shaped the resilience and leadership he carries into life.
“Football has taught me to never give up and always give 100% effort, no matter the circumstance,” McQueen said. “These lessons have made me a better person on and off the field.”
That growth affects how McQueen relates to younger teammates Ra’shaun Puckett and Jake Hitt. Seeing his younger self in both players, he strives to provide the guidance he once needed.
“I try my best to take them under my wing and be a leader and a mentor to them,” McQueen said.
His approach is rooted in an example set at home. McQueen considers his mother, an art teacher at St. Joseph Catholic School, his favorite teacher because she taught him to search for the good in others. Her influence reinforces the advice that continues to guide him: Treat others as you want to be treated.
“That piece of advice has influenced me to never judge a book by its cover and always look for the best in people,” he said.
McQueen puts those values into practice through Fostering Hope, a volunteer organization, and Muskogee’s Student Life Council. He also appreciates the hometown connections that have grown throughout his life, including the friendships and memories he has built there.
Away from football and school, McQueen enjoys spending time with his girlfriend and eating sushi. As he moves through his senior year, he remains thankful for the support surrounding him.
“I would like to thank God, as without Him I wouldn’t be here today, and thank my mom and dad for always being here for me and giving me the best opportunity to succeed,” McQueen said.
