Growth rarely comes without mistakes, and Muskogee High School senior Xavi Colina has learned to embrace both. As a center midfielder, he connects the field while approaching each challenge with perseverance.
“Soccer has taught me to persevere through hardships and tough times,” Colina said. “It helped me realize that mistakes are a necessary part of growth and success.”
One of Colina’s proudest moments came during his sophomore season, when he was named Offensive Player of the Year. Although the award recognized his individual performance, the people around him continue to shape who he is becoming.
His father is his greatest inspiration.
“He works so hard for our family and still has time for us,” Colina said. “He shows me what it is like to be an amazing dad and a great husband.”
Colina also credits his brother and former teammate, Cruz Colina, with showing him how to respond when circumstances become difficult.
“Although he has graduated, his impact on me has not left,” Colina said. “He showed me perseverance and courage in times when I was afraid and frustrated.”
Colina hopes to pass those qualities to his teammates through encouragement and care. He also remembers the confidence Mrs. Skaggs gave him during eighth grade by pushing him to improve and believing in his ability.
Representing Muskogee carries meaning beyond the school for Colina. He sees every practice and game as an opportunity to represent the entire community with pride. As his senior season progresses, he is intentionally appreciating the experience because he knows how quickly it passes.
Above all, Colina remains deeply grounded in his faith, family and gratitude. He looks up to Lionel Messi, whose humility amid extraordinary success reminds him to remain thankful.
“I want to thank God for the countless blessings he has given me,” Colina said.
