For Sydnee Lane, performing has always been a natural part of life. Whether she is dancing, singing or acting, the Muskogee High School senior has spent years developing confidence and creativity through the performing arts.
“I’ve been dancing since I was 5 years old,” Lane said. “I can’t remember a specific time where I started dance — it’s just always been a way I’ve expressed myself.”
Lane said hip-hop is her favorite style of dance, but the friendships she has built are what make the experience most meaningful.
“I enjoy the bond with my teammates and coaches,” she said. “That’s what makes it so special.”
Success on the dance team requires dedication. The squad practices weekday mornings throughout June, and once school begins, rehearsals run from 7 to 9 a.m. each day. Lane said the commitment is worth it, especially when it leads to opportunities to compete on a national stage.
“Any of the times we’ve performed at Nationals in Florida stand out,” Lane said.
Years of performing have also helped shape who she is away from the stage.
“Dance has taught me to open up and be more outgoing,” she said. “Growing up on stage has set me up for success in many ways.”
Lane credits her mother as the person who inspires her most.
“No matter how hard things are, she always keeps it together and has a positive attitude,” Lane said. “She’s one of the strongest people I know.”
She is equally thankful for the friendships dance has provided, especially with her best friend and teammate, Ardyn.
“Dance team has given us a way to constantly grow closer and spend time together,” Lane said.
Outside of dance, Lane is involved in Muskogee Advanced Chorale and enjoys singing and acting whenever she has the chance.
“Any way that I can showcase my talent on stage brings me so much joy,” she said.
In the classroom, English is Lane’s favorite subject, and she credits Ms. Lopez for making a lasting impact on her education. She also appreciates the close-knit feel of the Muskogee community and says Muskogee Little Theatre is her favorite local destination, a fitting place for someone whose life has long revolved around the stage.
