Success in the trenches rarely comes with much attention. Offensive and defensive linemen spend most Friday nights doing the hard work that creates opportunities for everyone else. It is a role Muskogee High School senior Jomontae Alexander has embraced, carrying a mindset built on discipline, family and putting the team first.

Alexander, who starts on both the offensive and defensive lines, said his love for football began by watching his older brother, Jaiden.

“I saw how football can change your life,” he said.

That perspective has stayed with him throughout his career. As he enters his senior season, Alexander has grown into one of the Roughers’ leaders, understanding that success begins with consistency and accountability.

Playing in the trenches demands focus and toughness on every snap. Alexander said offensive line play requires a high level of discipline because of the athletes lining up across from him.

“On the offensive line, you have to play at a higher level because you’ll face fast defensive linemen,” he said.

The physical nature of football has also given Alexander perspective. He recalls witnessing a severe injury to another player, a reminder of how quickly the game can change. One of his favorite memories, however, came when he delivered a key hit in the red zone that prevented an opposing touchdown.

More than anything, Alexander values the culture within Muskogee’s program.

“Everybody is welcome, and we’re treated like a big family,” Alexander said. “We don’t let nobody get behind. We all keep each other going.”

Football has also taught him lessons that extend beyond the field.

“You always have to put your pride to the side and do what you’re told,” he said. “There will always be someone guiding you.”

Away from football, Alexander enjoys spending time with friends and visiting the local stadium, a place where, as he put it, “the world goes blank” and he can focus on improving his game. He also enjoys math and still remembers fourth-grade teacher Mrs. Walker as one of the educators who made a lasting impact on him.

Looking ahead, Alexander hopes to give back to his community by helping those in need, especially people experiencing homelessness.
